Getting Started

“Easy choices, hard life. Hard choices, easy life”

We strongly believe, “Hard choices, easy life. Easy Choices, Hard life.” If you accept your current situation in life as it is and never challenge the status quo, you will never reach your full potential. For example, prior to starting Roamaroo, we were working normal 9-5 jobs, grinding on that corporate hustle.

We knew that we wanted more in life, but we didn’t know how to achieve it.

The transition to entrepreneurship required many hard choices for us to achieve what we innately knew was possible. While our life looks glamorous (and it is at times), it wasn’t easy. Our journey to success was filled with sleepless nights, anxiety, disagreements, and a lot of trial and error. In fact, Scott struggled for almost a year with nightmares about why we were doing this, continuously thinking

“I should go back to my old job,” “this will never work,” and asking the question, “what am I doing?” on a regular basis.

We both felt the strong pressure from society to conform to norms and stick with a 9-5 job complete with a consistent paycheck and benefits. To us, this was the “safe” route. But we realized that the salaries we were accepting in our corporate jobs were at the expense of our dreams. We had a greater calling to inspire the world that we had continuously silenced in order to be socially accepted. We had been stifling our inner entrepreneurs and it was time for them to come out into the world and play.

When we realized that we were control of our own destinies, we put our dreams first. As entrepreneurs, work doesn’t start at 9 and it doesn’t end at 5. In fact, sometimes it never stops. In the corporate world, it’s easy to get used to the world telling you what to do, but don’t EVER forget to ask yourself,

what do I want to do? What problems do I want to solve in this world?

As an entrepreneur, the onus is on you and that can be scary. If you screw up, it’s your life that you’re screwing up. That pressure can be overwhelming and stop you in your tracks before you even get started. But remember – hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life. We chose to invest in our ourselves, our visions, and our dreams and we’ve never looked back.

What can you do?

Start with Baby Steps

Five minute journal

1. Listen to the podcast that changed our life .

Yes, this is the podcast that started it all.  One day, after listening to this, Collette came home from work and was ready to travel the world.  2 weeks later our 7 month trip was planned and 4 weeks after that we boarded our first flight to Rio.

2. Read the book, “The four hour work week.”

Four hour work week book

“Are you working or just keeping busy?”

So often in life we find ourselves “keeping busy” and not really working.  In this book you’ll understand the importance of efficient work over movement. This cult classic book is great for anyone! While the name is a little misleading, (you’ll find out that you still have to “work”) It’s a great mind expanding book to help you re-evaluate all the big questions in life.  This book will help anyone use his or her time more effectively and generate energy towards achieving life goals.

3. Start Journaling: 5-min journal

Journaling or keeping a diary is one of the top habits that successful people engage in.  Journaling allows you to focus your mind, gain control of your happiness, and build mental clarity.  Scott started the 5-minute journal in 2015 and still does it to this day. He starts each day with this simple 5-min process that includes answering the following questions.

Five minute journal

-What are 3 things that you are grateful for?

These can be simple or big items. ie. “I’m grateful that the sun is shining today” or “I’m grateful that I finally asked my boss for a raise”

-What 3 thing would make today awesome?

These are usually your top 3 items you need to complete today.  This simple action forces you to prioritize your to-do list.

       -Daily affirmations

These are personal to each person.  You can write the same ones each day or make up new ones each morning.  Some examples are: “I never give up,” “I’m a hard working person,” “I am successful and happy,” “I will achieve my goals through hard work and passion,” “I am a passionate person.”

4. Watch “I’m not your guru”

Purpose and vision are powerful tools from which to gain inspiration.  This documentary follows Tony Robbins during his week long retreat, A Date with Destiny.  This movie shows that your mindset really controls your destiny.  While some people think Tony’s actions are fake or over the top, we found a great deal of inspiration while watching this documentary.  We continue to watch it yearly whenever we need a boost of inspiration from the best.

5. Fitness Challenge – Just warm up!

The rule is, you have to go the gym and warm up.  If you don’t want to work out after that, you can go home.

I,(Scott), have this interesting fitness rule for myself. This seems like a very silly rule but it works really well by tricking your mind.  It’s easy to think.. Okay, I’ll just go and warm up then go home.   And there are times that I have done that.  But in reality, 90% of the time the mental battle is just getting started.  Everyone has days where they don’t want to work out.  If you are struggling to get started on your fitness journey or struggling to get motivated for the day try this challenge.  You don’t have to work out, you only have to show up.  This can be a simple as just getting outside and walking.  Once you get the body moving, it’s easy to keep it moving.  The hardest step is the first one.

Still not sure what to do?

Ask yourself, “what is something I’ve wanted to do but I’ve been too afraid to take action?”

For some people it’s asking for a raise, switching careers, taking a road trip, taking a relationship to the next step or ending a relationship, taking your first international trip, or getting your passport. Whatever it is, it’s important to you and you should pursue it.

Our goal with Roamaroo is to help others get the most out of life. We want others, like yourself, to accomplish your life goals and dreams. We’re not saying you need to quit your job and travel the world. But we are saying you need to stretch your comfort zone and try something new. Maybe it’s going on your first road trip, asking for a raise, or starting a business. Whatever it is, we want to help you achieve your goals!
