Market Tour with Cooking Class

Things to do in Lisbon Portugal

This market tour with cooking class was a full-day epicurean experience that started at 10 am. After arriving at the Cooking Lisbon headquarters, the international class walked over to the local market, Mercado de Arroios. While at Mercado de Arroios, we walked around the market with our chef, Sarah, who showed us all of the different fresh fishes that local fishermen caught that day.

After picking out fresh fish, Sarah brought us through the garden-fresh vegetable and fruit section, carefully selecting the best vegetables for our lunch. We also picked out some chicken and selections for the dessert we were about to prepare. What was special about this experience was that we didn’t just go to a kitchen and start cooking. We went through the steps that a chef in Lisbon would go through. We went to the local market and picked out the freshest of ingredients to prepare a wonderful home cooked meal.

After returning to Cooking Lisbon, we started pouring wine, because every good chef must cook with wine! Then, we got to work on our meal. With ~8 people in the class from all over the world, we worked together to slice, dice, and chop vegetables and meats to prepare for our meal.

The cooking experience was informative and educational all with an enthusing atmosphere. We met new friends from London, Bordeaux, and New York, while learning about our chef Sarah’s background.

After we worked up an appetite in the kitchen, it was time for the best part – the food! We started with our seafood dish, the Fish Cataplana, then moved onto the delectable chicken in a pot, and finished with a special Portuguese dessert, Sericaia.
